Linux Lite 6.0 RC1 ya está disponible para pruebas.

El tema de esta Serie es la inclusión y la frescura. El navegador más nuevo, la suite de Office más nueva, el software personalizado más nuevo. Siempre ha sido el objetivo de Linux Lite proporcionar un sistema operativo ligero y completamente funcional. En la Serie 6x, este será nuestro enfoque continuo. Lo nuevo en esta versión son las tecnologías de asistencia. En forma de lector de pantalla, lupa de escritorio y teclado virtual. Cambios:
Nuevo tema de ventanas: Materia

Materia es el nuevo tema de ventanas. Manteniendo esa apariencia familiar, Materia se mantiene actualizada regularmente y es compatible con GTK 2, GTK 3, GTK 4, GNOME Shell, Budgie, Cinnamon, MATE, Unity, Xfce, LightDM, GDM, tema de Chrome, etc. Materia esta disponible en las variantes Light y Dark.





Tecnologías de asistencia - Teclado en pantalla + Lector de pantalla + Lupa de pantalla

Es un hecho bien conocido que nos dirigimos a los usuarios de Windows. Desde el primer inicio, Windows ofrece un sistema bastante completo. Eso incluye herramientas para personas con discapacidad auditiva y visual. En esta versión, se puede hacer zoom en el escritorio, hacer que un lector de pantalla le hable y completar tareas con un teclado en pantalla. Todas estas funciones serán además altamente configurables.

Teclado en pantalla: Onboard

La aplicación de teclado en pantalla es Onboard. El teclado virtual en pantalla es un método de entrada alternativo que puede reemplazar un teclado de hardware real, físico. El teclado virtual puede ser una necesidad en varios casos. Por ejemplo, su teclado físico se acaba de dañar; no tiene suficientes teclados para máquinas adicionales; su hardware no tiene un puerto disponible para conectar un teclado; experimenta dificultad para escribir en un teclado real; o está construyendo un quiosco web basado en pantalla táctil.



Lector de pantalla: Orca

Orca es un lector de pantalla gratuito, de código abierto, flexible y extensible del proyecto Gnome para personas ciegas o con problemas de visión. Usando varias combinaciones de síntesis de voz y braille, Orca ayuda a brindar acceso a las aplicaciones.

Si selecciona Configuración de Orca, se habilitará, ha sido advertido. Simplemente abra el Monitor del sistema y elimine la tarea si le molesta, use la tecla Insertar + S, o simplemente cierre sesión e inicie sesión de nuevo. Si desea que se inicie automáticamente cuando inicie su computadora, vaya a Sesión e Inicio, pestaña Inicio automático de la aplicación y marque la casilla Orca.

Insertar + S activa y desactiva la voz.

Ampliador de pantalla: Alt izquierdo + Rueda de desplazamiento del ratón

Se explica por sí mismo. Acérquese a cualquier parte del escritorio con la combinación de teclas Alt izquierda + Rueda de desplazamiento del mouse.



Nuevo navegador web predeterminado: Google Chrome

Ahora que Firefox viene como un paquete Snap de Ubuntu, y los usuarios de Windows deben poder lidiar con la menor cantidad posible de administradores de paquetes, Chrome fue la opción de reemplazo obvia. Enorme cuota de mercado, familiaridad con Windows, casi todo lo que se le lance simplemente funciona, todo con el respaldo de una empresa poco conocida llamada Google. También incluimos un Escáner de virus integrado para Chrome proporcionado por Virus Total (deshabilitado de forma predeterminada). Ahora Chrome le preguntará si desea escanear un archivo antes de abrirlo. Para habilitar esta función, simplemente enciéndala en Extensiones de Chrome.







Nuevo menú Grub:

Memtest ya no aparece en el menú de Grub. Con tantas herramientas de tecnología de arranque y PE disponibles ahora, parece un extra adicional innecesario que posiblemente incluso el 5% de las personas haya usado alguna vez. El nuevo aspecto Live Grub ahora tiene las opciones para Reiniciar, Apagar, así como las ya habituales.



LibreOffice

Un nuevo enfoque. Con LibreOffice en esta Serie, ahora proporcionaremos la última versión con cada lanzamiento. P.ej. con Linux Lite 6.2, se proporcionará la última versión estable de LibreOffice. Entre cada lanzamiento, esa versión permanecerá estática. Solo se actualizará con cada actualización de la serie interna. No será la versión 'early adopter' (como se muestra a continuación), sino la versión estable más reciente, como se muestra en rojo.



Parche ligero:

System Monitoring Center: reemplaza el Administrador de tareas y el Visor de procesos

El Administrador de tareas y el visor de procesos han reemplazados por una herramienta que hace ambos trabajos y más. Htop todavía está instalado, solo que ya no está en el menú. Hemos bifurcado el nuevo Centro de Monitoreo del Sistema para proporcionar información más específica sobre Linux Lite (consulte la pestaña Sistema).
Con System Monitoring Center, obtiene información sobre su CPU, RAM, disco, red y GPU. También obtiene información y herramientas de rendimiento, procesos, inicio, servicios y sistema en una aplicación fácil de usar y altamente configurable. ¿Cómo sé si mi PC con Windows tiene UEFI?
En la búsqueda de Windows, escriba msinfo o msinfo32e inicie la aplicación de escritorio denominada Información del sistema. Busque el elemento del modo BIOS, y si el valor es UEFI, entonces tiene el firmware UEFI. Si dice BIOS Modo heredado, entonces ese es el firmware que está ejecutando.

Se admite el arranque seguro, pero a menos que sepa exactamente cómo manejarlo, puede ser un dolor de cabeza y causante de molestias no deseadas, por lo que se recomienda deshabilitar el arranque seguro para evitar este tipo de inconvenientes.

[color=rgb(38, 38, 38)]To sign, edit, and modify PDFs, it seemed I had to use several different Linux desktop tools (Xournal, Foxit, PDF Mod, etc) because Adobe Reader/Acrobat wasn't really available for Linux.  I haven't used this extension yet, but since it's browser based, it may come in handy as a way to use Adobe in Linux.[/color]

Hello.

Just flashed a USB. stick with Linux Lite 6 on a Dell Inspiron and tested it in a live session to see how it worked. On the bottom right I clicked on the "Package Update" and
I always get the error log below regardless of how many times during the day I re-try this. I don't think it's a temporary situation. I just don't understand this.

I've tested a lot of different Linux Distros. and I have done "Updates" in live sessions and didn't have any problems with those.

Thoughts and comments are appreciated. Thanks.

Release Announcement

Linux Lite 6.0 RC1 is now available for testing.

The theme of this Series is inclusion and freshness. The newest Browser, the newest Office suite, the newest custom software. It always been my goal to provide a lean, fully functioning operating system. In Series 6x this will be our ongoing focus. New to this release are Assistive Technologies. In the form of a screen reader, a desktop magnifier and a virtual keyboard. All tools that ensures our hearing and sight impaired community is no longer forgotten. A new Theme, a new System Monitor and Manager round out the main new features.

Changes:

New Window theme: Materia

Materia is the new window theme. Keeping that familiar appearance, Materia is regularly maintained and it supports GTK 2, GTK 3, GTK 4, GNOME Shell, Budgie, Cinnamon, MATE, Unity, Xfce, LightDM, GDM, Chrome theme, etc. Materia comes in both Light and Dark themes.





Assistive Technologies - Onscreen Keyboard + Screen Reader + Screen Magnifier

It's a well known fact that we target Windows users. Out of the box, Windows offers a fairly complete system. That includes tools for the hearing and sight impaired. In this release you can zoom in on the desktop, have a screen reader talk to you and complete tasks with an onscreen keyboard. All these functions will also be highly configurable.

Onscreen Keyboard: Onboard

The onscreen keyboard application is Onboard. On-screen virtual keyboard is an alternative input method that can replace a real hardware keyboard. Virtual keyboard may be a necessity in various cases. For example, your hardware keyboard is just broken; you do not have enough keyboards for extra machines; your hardware does not have an available port left to connect a keyboard; you experience difficulty in typing on a real keyboard; or you are building a touchscreen-based web kiosk.



Screen Reader: Orca

Orca is a free and open-source, flexible, extensible screen reader from the Gnome project for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Using various combinations of speech synthesis and braille, Orca helps provide access to applications.

If you select Orca Settings, it will be enabled, you have been warned. Just Open System Monitor and kill the Task if it annoys you, use Insert key + S, or simply Logout/in. If you want it to autostart when you start your computer, go to Session and Startup, Application Autostart tab and tick the Orca box.

Insert+S toggle speech on and off.

Screen Magnifier: Left Alt + Mouse Scroll-wheel

Fairly self explanatory. Zoom in on any part of the desktop with the Left Alt + Mouse Scroll-wheel key combo.



New Default Web Browser: Google Chrome

Now that Firefox comes as a Snap package from Ubuntu, and Windows users need to be able to deal with as few package managers as possible, Chrome was the obvious replacement choice. Huge market share, Windows familiarity, just about everything you throw at it just works, all with the backing of a little known company called Google. We also include a built in Virus Scanner to Chrome supplied by Virus Total (disabled by default). Now Chrome will ask you if you'd like a file scanned before you open it. To enable this feature, just turn it On under Chrome Extensions.







New Grub menu:

Memtest no longer appears in the Grub menu. With so many PE and bootable tech tools out there now, it seems like an unnecessary added extra that I doubt even 5% of people ever used. New look Live Grub below now has Restart, Shutdown as well as the usual options.



LibreOffice

A new approach. With LibreOffice in this Series, we will now provide the latest version with every release. Eg. When we release 6.2, we will make sure the latest stable LibreOffice is provided. No longer will we lag behind for the duration of a Series. In between each release, that version will stay static. It will only be updated with each inner Series upgrade. It will not be the 'early adopter' version (as shown below) but the latest stable as shown in red.



Lite Patch:

We used to get Lite Software to do all the heavy lifting here, but now with it's own package, emergency fixes can be applied super quick.

System Monitoring Center: replaces Task Manager and Process Viewer

Gone is the Task Manager and Process Viewer, replaced by a tool that does both jobs and more. Htop is still installed, just no longer on the Menu.
We've forked the new System Monitoring Center to provide more specific information regarding Linux Lite (see the System tab).
With System Monitoring Center, you get information about your CPU, RAM, Disk, Network and GPU. You also get Performance, Processes, Startup, Services and System tools and information in one easy to use, highly configurable application. This is one of the nicest, most sensible applications I have seen on the free software world for a long time, and we are lucky to have it.

How do I know if my Windows PC has UEFI?

In Windows Search, type msinfo or msinfo32 and launch the desktop app named System Information. Look for the BIOS Mode item, and if the value for it is UEFI, then you have the UEFI firmware. If it says BIOS Mode Legacy, then that’s the firmware you’re running.

Secure Boot is supported, but unless you know exactly how to handle it, it is a P.I.T.A. at best so I am going to say...you must disable Secure Boot to enable stress free computing.

There is NO Grub Edit in Lite Tweaks in this Series for Linux Lite due to an unsolvable issue. Ubuntu will show in the Grub menu if you are dual or more booting. Try Grub Customizer if it annoys you.
Grub menu shows Linux Lite as 'Ubuntu'. See below for more on this.

- Open /etc/default/grub as Administrator.
- Comment out: GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian` and leave GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Linux Lite' uncommented.
- Should look like:

Help Manual is 90% complete.

OEM Install option - is broken and crashes near the end of the install. If a fix can't be found, it will be excluded from each release until a solution if found.

There is no upgrade to or from RC releases. RC releases are for testing only and it is not recommended to run them as your main or secondary operating system.

Yes, it's our biggest ISO to date, software evolves and gains more features, that's what happens. Linux Lite still boots to 520mb of used memory on your average system so we are still Lite, and still half the size of a Windows 11 ISO with arguably more useful off the Menu features.

Hi Folks,
If I had more time I believe I could work this out, however I'm preparing to depart South Africa and my high school students with whom I have placed my old donated laptops with Linux Lite (which has been WONDERFUL) hence I'm in a bit of time crunch at the moment.

One of my guys did change the settings (not sure if it was desktop settings or panel) and when he booted up the laptop the next time it showed what to me looks almost like a default screen rather than the original screen I had it set on.  Here is a link that will show:
1) the first screen he is presented with, then
2) what I think is a default screen
3) What the screen actually looked like originally before he did some changes.

Hey there everyone.

I have installed Linux Lite on my computer. Thanks to having difficulty getting a c++ compiler to work on this computer, I wish to be able to use Windows 10. Ideally, I would not need to dual boot, because I can merely run a virtual box with Windows 10 installed.

What would you recommend I do to make this happen? Yes, my plan after it is installed, I would then run Microsoft's Visual Studio, because, unlike the two c++ compilers, this software actually works right out of the box.
