laptop / W8 / Lite install situation
#11
Glad the information was useful.

info hasn't yet got me installed with lite thio am just about to give it another go. of course i appreciate your time and effort to assist and the fact that linux is a free community , volunteer project. what i worry about, as a linux novice, is that it's the love child of a bunch of geekks who have no sympathy for the mid to low level computer user so it will be complex and unfathomable unless yopu've been to MIT. i am willing to try and will see how i get on.

there is some info on google about vosteran hijacker being caught thro sourceforge which is where your linux download link sent me. your fault afterall? maybe you shd review your links. vosteran very stubborn piece of distruptive programming.

Ok , & M$ never have anything wrong ! You paid for one licence & would have had to pay for another one , who s been hijacked here .

The best thing with Linux is that it s free . M$ isn t you wrote it on your 1st post .

You bought your computer refurbished , what is it , I mean the model & specs .

I downloaded lots of linux distros & never had anyone being hijacked or whatever in 7-8 years .

In linux you have people that help others on a free time basis & you keep blasting them on & on , you don t help yourself here . You look like a scam to me , sorry , but it looks like it . I haven t went to college or whatever , so no MIT for me ( just a machinist course & a big truck course plus an high school diploma ) , & lots of other people haven t been to MIT .

What s your point here .

People get help here & from what I ve seen up till now , most everyone get help , unless people can t help them somehow because of some newest computers that have no linux support yet because it s too new .

From what I ve seen in this thread is that people want to help & you keep blasting linux , is that me or it s something else .

check here for vosteran / sourceforge info

i wd advise you taht berating the bringer of bad tidings does no one any good. how does linux develop ? reporting of faults. stop being emotional and righteous.  it's anti rational and destructive.

just because something is free does not put it above criticism. as i expected, there is judgement from linux users that i am using M$ at all. that's a geek perspective. you need to understand why M$ are popular with joe soap and persuade joe soap to abandon the corporate people not get abrasive with your potential users.

This hijacker comes from the browser : http://removevirusmalware.com/remove-vos...ker-virus/

I haven t talked across my hat here . It s easy to find some  thing on google or any other search engines if it s for our own purposes .

Funny from someone like you that I m a bringer of bad news .

Lots of people use both linux & M$ for either gamers uses or some cad/cam , & so on , I don t use ms because I don t need it . I have nothing against it .

You keep blasting linux users/dev again , also you never told what hardware that you have , how do you want people to give you a hand here or whatever forum that you would be in .

What s the source of your download to make sure that you have the right one .

By the way , I m no dev or mod here , just doing my little stuff . Try to help other people .

redrobot,

You got off on the wrong foot here and you're not really helping yourself by insisting that garbage aimed at mucking up Windows systems is somehow the fault of Linux Lite.  There is nothing nefarious on the LL ISO file.  We have no control over any ad-related pop-ups offering "download helpers" on Sourceforge site.  We have no control over people who click to accept such things or add other such programs on their own in some other manner to their Windows system and subsequently end up with nonsense on their computer.

Sounds like you were pretty happy with Windows until they asked you to pay for it, so I'm not really sure "why" you're here and what you are expecting from Linux Lite.  Be forwarned, LL is a nice, stable OS that will likely handle most (if not all) of your computing needs -- but it is not a Windows clone.  Many things will be very similar to what you're used to (web browsing, office program), but there will be plenty of differences that will take some time to get used to also.  If you're not willing to learn some new things, then save yourself and us some time and potential frustration by just buying another copy of Windows 8.

If you are willing to put forth a little effort learning a new OS and go about asking for help in a more cordial manner, we'll be much more receptive.

I don't know what the "FileOpener" you're using is, but if it's some type of file opening program you put on your Windows system and it's integrated itself into the browser for downloading things, that is most likely the source of your pop-ups, hijackers, etc.  We didn't install it on your browser -- you did.

Suggest you deactivate or uninstall that thing.  There is no need for something like that just to download an ISO file (or any file for that matter).  You should be able to just click the download link and have the browser itself ask you where to save the file to.  The browser will handle the download without any help from some third-party app.

If you can't get rid of it or deactivate it then download a different browser and use that instead.  Eg.  If you're using Internet Explorer, download and install either Firefox or Google Chrome to Windows, then use that browser to download the file since it won't have the FileOpener thing mucking it up.

(01-09-2015, 02:05 AM)redrobot link Wrote: i go to my pc to download linux lite onto USB which i do - at 935MB    <----WRONG SIZE!

here are the files i have on the usb -

boot
isolinux.bin
isolinux.cfg
linux-lite-2.2-64bit(1).iso(1).crdownload
linux-lite-2.2-64bit.iso(1).crdownload
linux-lite-2.2-64bit
linux-lite-2.2-64bit.iso(1).torrent
linux-lite-2.2-64bit.iso.torrent
memtest
splash

After downloading, you should only have one file on your computer -- linux-lite-2.2-64bit.iso and it should only be 738MB in size as stated on LL download page:

FILENAME:

linux-lite-2.2-64bit.iso

SIZE:

738MB - DVD

MD5SUM:

0b08075d414e402d2493c46bbf0589e5

General procedure to follow:
-- download the ISO file to your computer (not to the USB stick)
-- burn the file to a DVD or a USB  (this is not a regular copy operation to the USB)
-- put DVD/USB in computer and reboot
-- if necessary, change BIOS settings so computer boots from the live DVD/USB instead of hard drive.

If you read the Help Manual page for installing that I linked to before and you should be able to install without any problems.  Procedure is explained there and is relatively simple -- but it appears you have not read the page.  If you don't understand something in instructions, it's perfectly fine to post back and ask for clarification.

From here on out let's concentrate on getting you installed and forget the back and forth banter about pop-ups, hijackers, etc.  One more post about that and I'm going to close the thread down.

I'm shutting this down, with a series of false claims OP is abusive and non deserving of assistance. Thank you to all those who took their time to answer.
