Webcam working erratically.
#1
Hello,

I am a new comer to Linux and not very tech savvy. So kindly bear with me if I sound a bit silly. I have been using Linux Lite since January this year and recently reinstalled the distro since Lite 2.0 came. First I installed 32 bit and everything was working perfectly, but then I realized my laptop DELL vostro 1015 had a 64 bit processor so I uninstalled the 32 bit version and installed the 64 bit. Since then I have had some problems that I never had. The system freezes some times and I have to shut it down with power button. And the problem I have not been able to solve is the Webcam (Cheese and Gucview) works as long as I take videos, but as soon as I take a snapshot it crashes (freezes or disappears). Please help.

Check at Menu>Settings>Install Drivers to see if there is any proprietary drivers for your hardware. I saw that it has an external graphics card and maybe that's an issue. Can you tell us when it crashes? At idle or when just browsing between folders or on the Internet?

How do I know if the drivers are missing. It freezes only when I take a picture. Webcam turns on, yes, it takes videos perfectly.

"No additional drivers available" after clicking on "install drivers".

Maybe the program you use is buggy. I can't think something else. Try something else to see what happens. Maybe the driver for the webcam will have some problems as well.

Go to Menu>System>Create a system report and attach the txt (which you can find at your home folder) at the first post for others to see the specs of your PC. Someone else may have a better idea.

I found a similar problem here. Maybe the camera driver is not supported from the 64bit kernel (?)

Should I reinstall the 32 bit version?
