Error Log - grub-install error code 1

grub-install is failing when setting boot variables.  Several possible causes.  To aid troubleshooting is it possible to provide any context at all ?

For example
Is this a dual boot system perhaps ?
Has it been working ok ?
What changed since it worked ?
Does the system boot regardless ?

Assuming you can boot the system, the output of

efibootmgr -v

df | grep /boot/efi

will show us some information about the systems boot options which may help work out what is happening.
