unsupported meaning no help from forum or just that it's been modified to a point that it would be difficult to figure out.

I've not seen a definition of 'unsupported' in this context.  With end of life software it is fairly well understood - forum requests for support of EoL software tend to get closed with the recommendation to upgrade to a supported version.
In the case of doing something 'off menu' and having a problem as a result it is less clear.
This thread remains open and individuals may choose to contribute.  If someone has done this and can help or just thinks 'that's an interesting situation' then this may develop further.

How would one inexperienced person with an understanding of basic computers do this?

It may be possible to research, understand and 'patch' each problem as they crop up, but the gain really wouldn't match the pain when compared to a fresh install (in my view).

Probably best to start a new thread if you want help debugging the fresh install.
