You get this message if something went wrong with an earlier update attempt.
To correct this, open a terminal session (click menu -> system-> terminal emulator)
In the resulting terminal window enter the command in the code box below and press return.
You should be asked to enter your password. Type it in and then press return.
Once the dpkg command has run, updating should work again.
