Hi,
I think VLC usually is updated trought the standard updates or the system.
Of course there could be a "developement/nightly builds" more recent, but these usually are considered less stable, break functions, etc.
I usually stay with the standard "stable" releases and is what I recommend... unless a special support of feature is needed.
If everything works with VLC and your media files, keep the default.
