Again, I think this is a thing of the past and in this era, in this year, 2019, 21st century, this isn't true anymore. Most modern distros are designed to be user friendlier; the likes of Linux Lite, Linux Mint, MX-Linux  and others are doing a great effort in breaking that myth of "Linux being a diffcult OS for normal people to use". Sure, manufacturers and retailers still focus of the "main stream" OSes but, if given the choice people would certainly choose Linux over any other of those ones once they acknowledge the benefits of using a Linux OS. Other OSes keep their market share mostly because that's what people are being offered, there's a lot of business involved in that; anti-virus companies, videogames companies, hardware companies ... there's no money in letting people to use a free operating system that doesn't get in their way while at the same time teaches them how their computers really work.
