Taskbar won't stay auto hidden

First of all calm down. There might be an easy solution for this. That's the menu that you can change the autohide function: Go to Settings > Panel and you will see a similar window as below.

Automatically show and hide the panel must be checked. I don't there is other way to do this. Also  check that the panel is locked. If it is not be sure that lays at the bottom of the screen and then lock it.
