How to restore a messed up desktop?

I solved it! Thanks to trinidad who pointed me in the right direction: after setting desktop's resolution to the maximum my monitor could allow I started to see the desktop underneath the panels


Then I set the correct dimensions of the taskbar panel and everything's back to normal
