Your need to reboot from recovery mode most likely means that the 4.0 Linux Lite kernel probably won't work for you. I have machines here that will not run the 3.19.0 kernel, which I believe is the highest Linux Lite kernel currently available. I had to revert back to a kernel where everything worked.
You will probably have to 'fall back' to the previous kernel. Boot from recovery mode, and the misbehaving kernel can then be uninstalled in Synaptic Package Manager (Install/Remove Software)...
