You've probably got a mess onboard with all the drivers you've tried. Format and reinstall if it's not an issue.

Which nvidia drivers are compatible with kernel 4.4.0-34-generic?

The above is a further clean reinstall, but I think I will do another clean install, reformatting the SSD, as the nvidia install seems be completely blocked.
Before installing nvidia 361 do I need to remove the X.orgX server -- Nouveau display driver? Scrolling back through the terminal output, I notice that I did not run sudo apt autoremove, as instructed in the terminal output, to remove packages efibootmgr, libefivar0 and libpango1.0-0. I don't know whether my omission here had any bearing on the installation getting stuck...? Okay, I'll try again, using nvidia optimus on a fresh LL3.0 install.. If this fails I'll probably return to LL2.8 Mike
64bit OS (32-bit on Samsung[i] netbook) installed in [i]Legacy mode on MBR-formatted SSDs (except pi which uses a micro SDHC card):
2017 - Raspberry pi 3B (4cores) ~ [email protected] - LibreElec, used for upgrading our Samsung TV (excellent for the task) 2012 - Lenovo G580 2689 (2cores; 4threads] ~ [email protected] - LL3.8/Win8.1 dual-boot (LL working smoothly) 2011 - Samsung NP-N145 Plus (1core; 2threads) ~ Intel Atom [email protected] - LL 3.8 32-bit (64-bit too 'laggy') 2008 - Asus X71Q (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6/Win8.1 dual-boot, LL works fine with kernel 4.15 2007 - Dell Latitude D630 (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6, works well with kernel 4.4; 4.15 doesn't work
@Jerry
Success! Problem solved finally on the 4th fresh install of LL3.0. For the record I will explain how I installed nvidia optimus so that it may help others. In the LL Help Manual (under Video Drivers Graphics NVIDIA Optimus) it shows two lines of code to enter in the terminal, following a fresh install. I emphasize here that this should be done FIRST before anything else, following the fresh install. The error I made was that I started with LL updates first, once I'd done a fresh install, instead of starting with the install of nvidia optimus. I think this point needs to be made much clearer in the Help Manual. So finally, these were the steps that worked: 1. Make a fresh clean install of LL3.0 (make sure the install takes up the whole of the drive - i.e. don't leave any unallocated space - don't know whether this point is strictly necessary but it is what I did, e.g. 40GB for '/', the remainder of the drive used for '/home') 2. Reboot 3. Install nvidia optimus (according to Help Manual) 4. Update kernel to latest version, currently 4.4.0-36-generic (using sudo apt-get install linux-generic) 5. Install LL Updates (from Menu) 6. Then other stuff, e.g. Lite Software, etc, etc... I hope you got some sleep last night - I notice it was half-past-midnight when you last replied to me! Thanks Mike
