Auto login an account with a blank password

I have an account that I wish to auto login with. I have found the docs that tell me how do to this but all of them say you need to enter the account's password. As the account in question does not have a password (and I don't want it to have one) this appears to be problematic.

Any ideas?

Are you referring to the - menu > system > login settings - feature or something else?

but all of them say you need to enter the account's password. As the account in question does not have a password (and I don't want it to have one) this appears to be problematic.

The system is asking for a password for security purposes to turn on the auto-login feature. The password you enter here will not create or change an existing password.

Here's an example of what I mean by security feature. If you logged into your computer as roscol as then gave it to me to use I can't just set the auto-login feature when you're not looking.

You say the account does not have a password. Thinking of the account you created when you installed Linux Lite what did you type in for password, nothing? Did you just press the enter key two times first when asked for a password and then again to confirm the password? If the answer is yes then when you're asked to enter your password, type nothing, and press the enter key.

The auto-login feature (to the best of my knowledge) is not about no password but automatically signing a user into the computer at start-up with their existing password, automatically. So for security purposes it would be better to have an account password with auto-login then an account with no password and auto-login.

Hi, thanks for that.

I created a new (non-admin) user called "student", simply pressing enter for the password (i.e. no password). Your point about security makes sense but in this case, given how we are using the laptop, this is not important. If someone does set a password we will log in as admin and remove it.

Basically it is a kiosk type machine.

Well not properly as the user still needs to click enter to log in, auto login without a password set seems not to be possible.
