A system running a Live image is not intended to be updated.
A Live image is typically a USB drive or a DVD made by burning an ISO file (using something like etcher or rufus) directly to the media.

Once the OS has been fully installed to an internal disk and rebooted from the disk the update/upgrade process should work.
If you are getting errors after having fully installed the OS to disk, removed the live image media and rebooted, please provide more details.

If the intention is actually to run the OS from a USB drive (rather than installing to an internal disk) extra steps are required when preparing the media.
To use a USB device as a portable bootable OS with update and data retention, search using terms like 'persistent usb install' and/or 'full install to usb'.
