Help Please urgent.

Have been running live CD LL2.0 on desktop without difficulty. 160gb two partition - main Vista + second smaller HP backup/recovery.  Main partition had circa 30 GB free into which the LL2.0 was to go..

Tried to install dual boot but installation did not give me the option.  So not wishing to replace vista I  ceased installation via the "quit" option.

On shutting don LL2.0 live removing CD and then rebooting desktop, the computer is hanging and not going into Vista mode.  Retried  start up of vista after having switched desktop off from the mains.

Any guidance as to how to get desktop functioning on Vista again much appreciated.  Hope i have not lost all the data on the disk.

Thank you.

Thanks Sammyone.
Unfortunately the recovery disk that came with the HP PC dc7700 only gave me one option and that was to restore to the last recovery point.  In this case that was Factory Set Up as no alternative setup point could be detected on the hard disk.  i.e. No Recovery alternative option from tthe recovery DVD;  hence lost all the data on the drive.  Have backups, but not very recen,t so a real dogs dinner as they say.  Will have to make the best of it.

SO for those  embarking on a similar path, make sure you have a current back up of all your important files BEFORE you try and  install a dual boot.  Live CD had not given problems.

Trouble is need a Windows machine option as back up hence the rty for dual boot with Vista.

What is winLite - would that be a viable windows back up run under WINE?

Sounds like you've already re-installed Windows and lost whatever wasn't backed-up, so this is too late for you.

Just in case someone else stumbles onto this post looking for solution, here's another way to attempt getting MS Windows to boot if you don't have a Windows installation/recovery disk:  http://robert.penz.name/221/mini-howto-r...ith-linux/.

Hello!

I've had success using boot-repair (Google it for more details) from a LiveCD to remove remnants of a GRUB install and restore my Windows boot. I'd give THAT a try before 'throwing in the towel'...

LL2.0 Live CD runs OK once fully loaded BUT during loading whilst the initial feather countdown screen appears OK, the next sequence whilst loading from DVD send the screen into wild oscillations  along the vertical axis starting at the centre.  I needed to switch the screen off at this stage as I was concerned for its electronics. Switching the screen on again whn all was loaded.  The PC performed well although burning DVD was not tested.  LAN, sound , resolution etc OK.  Some fiddling with Pulse setting needed for SKYPE outgoing.
The problems really came when trying to do a full install.  The 160 GB HDD was originally partitioned into 145 GB for Vista and 15 GB for HP Recovery software.  There was free space on the HDD first partition of circa 15GB into which I hope LL2.0 would be loaded.

On LL2.0 install did NOT give me the option 1) install alongside Vista Looked at the last option - custom partition. But as newbie  out my comfort zone. So “QUIT” from that stage. - DVD tray opened - Live DVD removed and then rebooted computer to find it hang - black screen flashing cursor..  Unfortunately my DVD recovery did not give me the MBR recovery option so ended up reformatting. Fortunately the key data had been backed up - little important lost.

Persevere

So with a clean install of VISTA and a massive 120 GB spare room on partition 1, I tried to fully install LL2.0 from the full DVD.  This time all went smoothly. HOWEVER it did not appear to give me the option for dual install IF the partition for LL2.0  chosen was only10GB; i.e I had to choose a greater partition size.

BUT then, on rebooting and finding the booting options, Vista option worked fine/smoothly, but the LL2.0 option threw the screen into the wild oscillation stage again.  Unfortunately I could not live with this and so cut my losses. This PC is my main work PC

For now the PC is running on faultlessly with MINT MAYA 32 bit full install.  However want to go back to LL2.0. at some stage. LL1.08 running faultlessly on my  Linux learning old Tosh A10 laptop AND LL2.0 32 bit running equally as well on my Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Si1520 work laptop.  Have not tried Burner or remote screen/projector  port yet

Sorry for long diatribe, but I hope it will be of some help.

BTW the  HP dc 7700 ( described above) works fine with puppy linux precise 5.7.1 from a USB stick.
