Linux Lite 7.0 on Sony Vaio

I just installed LL 7.0 on a 2011 machine!
None of the reported problems occured, and everything works fine.
The interesting part, I guess it is the fact that the video is NVidia. I saw lately some posts regarging glitches in the use of NVidia.
To cut the long story short, here is the machine data:

Later update:

I added the machine to the Linux Lite HW-DB:
https://www.linuxliteos.com/hardware_results.php?q=Intel+Pentium+B960#search_results
It looks it is the first entry for the Linux Lite 7.x series.

The ID string is:

Linux Lite 7.x Series: User Submitted on 06/13/2024 08:55
The hour is the server time (For me, it's 17:00, UTC+3).
You can compare the entry with the above output of inxi (It's the same command I used).

Best regards, Șerban.

My conclusions to this:

1. I recommend to the less experienced users, to keep using the Linux Lite 6.6, at least as long as the Launchpad is still upgrading the security from RSA1024 to RSA4096.
The only thing I can help with this, is to keep you posted with the changes.
As I said before, I have two different Linux Lite installations (6.6 and 7.0) and a hot-pluggable Delock 47230 drive unit that allows me to switch from one drive to another very fast.
As for the system itself, I can keep posting the package updates as they are available.
As you can see, in today's update, a new kernel (linux-image-6.8.0-35-generic) has been installed and some other packages.

2. As for the ones that want to go with Linux Lite 7.0, I offered in the previous posts in this thread the solution for the Mozilla Thunderbird packages.

Thanks, again!
I never really worried. As I said in a previous post, I already have a backup solution.
Anyway, I always disable PPAs that generate errors and from time to time, I retest them. Usually, the problems get solved and I can re-enable them for a long time.
No big deal.
I noticed that usually when a major OS version is published, this kind of errors appear from time to time.
As the usual release time of the major version and the end of life time between the last issue and the current offers enough time, all I need is patience and sometimes some more testing.
Since 2012, when I switched to Linux for good, I never had real problems that I could never solve.
A glitch here and there, is something normal, as I see it.
Anyway, compared to the Windows environment, that caused me tons of headaches, Linux is the "Garden of Eden"! Nothing less!!
Now getting some more specific, Linux Lite stands tall for a low footprint on the machine.
I can understand the trend of using more and more resources, as the CPU and RAM specs are constantly increasing, but that goes at a certain cost (like in "price" = money) too.
As everybody on this Forum could see, I have an old machine, Dell Precision T1700 that I bought as SH, in July 2020:

Code: [Select]
Mobo: Dell model: 048DY8 v: A01 serial: <filter> UEFI: Dell v: A25
  date: 02/02/2018

and a very old one, ASUS X200MA (2014).
As long as the gran'pa ASUS can run a brand-new 2024 OS (Linux Lite 7.0 is a really a brand-new one!), we have something here!

I really appreciate it very much!

While ASUS is a machine I use when I'm away from home, it's kinda comforting to know I can rely on that for my trips. It's small enough and I can accomodate it in my luggage.
Further more, there are lots of people here on the forum that use this kind of machines.
A few days ago, a friend of mine came to me and asked me to test some oldies and he said that sometime later this month, wants me to throw a Linux on them. One is a Sony Vayo and the other, a HP.
Both are some Dual Core, 2 threads, 4 GB RAM machines. Far better than my ASUS.
If the guy keeps his mind, I'll put a report on the Lite HW DB.
As anyone can figure out that, for me, the ASUS is kinda reference guide machine.

Best regards, Șerban.

FYI - Firefox, Thunderbird are snaps, so in LL 7x I've added the Mozilla/Thunderbird PPA's, no need to get 'the latest' versions. Skype is now a snap too :(
Lite Tweaks glitches - not concerned about those, unless someone would like to submit the changes :)
Thanks!  ;)
Yesterday though, the Mozilla PPA throwed an error. Had to disable it.
I'll check again. (I'm on LL 6.6 now).

Hallo!

Yes, shouldn't it be 24.04 "Noble" now?  I notice that too Trinidad.

Also, Try booting into "Live" mode and running Google Chrome - it doesn't work for me.

What's the issue in /etc/lsb-release ?

The file on my install looks like this.

Code: [Select]
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=22.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=jammy
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Linux Lite 7.0"

System Restore Utility uses this to tag snapshots.
Snapshots of LL7.0 systems get labelled as '22.04 Jammy'. Confused me on a multi-boot setup until you identified why it was happening.

We've always run the file that way (lsb), otherwise it can mess up the updates system.
Fair enough.  It didn't seem consistent with the pattern of previous releases I looked at - was expecting 24.04 and noble rather than 22.04 and jammy.

Ah! I see what you mean, don't know why that didn't get updated. I'll release a fix.

If you try to create the file it will tell you that it already exists. Once I did that the error stopped appearing in the terminal.
TC
There was no directory (file). I created it and the message disappeared, indeed. The problem is that this should work otherwise...
I forgot to let the directory after testing and see what happens in time.
The code needs to be changed, to prevent this latency thing.

All opinions expressed and all advice given by Trinidad Cruz on this forum are his responsibility alone and do not necessarily reflect the views or methods of the developers of Linux Lite. He is a citizen of the United States where it is acceptable to occasionally be uninformed and inept as long as you pay your taxes.

/root/.local/share/Trash/files/
Technically not an error. Always shows up when you run from terminal. To make it stop open Thunar as root and show hidden files. Once you've simply found the directory that way the message will just go away the next time you start tweaks. I'd guess it's a PATH that can't be added during install, or an installation artifact given the behavior.

TC

Actually, this message IS about a real error. You can check the existence of '/root/.local/share/Trash/' and there is nothing like that.

Code: [Select]
ls: cannot access '/root/.local/share/Trash/files/': No such file or directory
To explain this though, is a little more sophisticated.
It is about the DSP chain and the latency of each hardware piece.
Since each of the components have their own latency and this adds up, we can get to this errors, mostly on the new models of storage (SSD).
Measurements show on a USB 3.0 bus, a read access time of 0,2 msec and sometimes, 0,1 msec.
If the write instruction takes 0,21 msec, than the read instuction will generate a read error, due to the gap of 0,01 msec between the write and read instructions.
I guess it can be solved introducing a pause (delay) of a certain value (wait 0,01 -- for one, or a fake iteration) after the write instruction. Eventually test the created entity, until the error disappears.
While I was working on a program, long ago, I had to read/write in cascade and I got errors. Using a MessageBox, solved the problem and it confused me.
I changed the code in order to test the existence of each written entity and this solved the problem after removing the MessageBox.
By that time, I wasn't aware of the latency issue.
Further more, there were many types of storage I was using and the code only crashed apparently, in a random manner.
Then I understood that different storage units, have different access time, thus, different latency values.
