Whoops apocalypse (nearly)... Officially now a Linuxian - ian_r_h - 10-07-2017

Hi, all,

Well, I have officially made the switch to Linux Lite from Windows 10 this afternoon.

I had planned to switch anyway, testing the water with the option to fail back to Windows 10 for the time-being should any major problems arise...

...but Microsoft being a major "problem" (or some other word), my Windows 10 laptop has decided it doesn't want to update now.  Which is, I suppose, at least a less unpleasant change from wanting to update whenever it does, rather than when I'm ready to.

Having tested LL for the past week, I have this old familiar feeling again - like I'm flying the aeroplane... rather than some faceless corporation is flying "my" aeroplane, making me pay through the nose for the privilege, and not taking me where I want to go either.

Only three or four minor issues found, which I may post on the forum if I cannot find any work-arounds.  None of the serious (yay!)  Smile  Then again, the work-arounds may be helpful for someone anyway if I can find them.

Anyone else fallen in love with LL after years of a, er, troubled marriage with Windows?

Hmmm... is this an affair?  No, I'm definitely wanting to leave my "wife".  I want a divorce, Microsoft!  ;D

Thanks again for all of you making me feel welcome.

Ian

It is possible to leave MS completely, you have to have an iron will. Make them need you, not the other way around. Jocklad is paving the way.

You'll survive without the "Mothership" hovering overhead. There hasn't been a Windows PC in my home for over 12 or 13 years, and that includes my wife. I personally haven't used a Windows box for well over 15 years. Kinda wish I had marked the occasion a bit better so I knew for sure how long it really has been. And I have converted many friends, relatives, and just good neighbors to Linux as well.

Yep, life without viruses, Trojans, and somebody else telling you what your desktop will look like is a much better life.  8)

I, and I'm sure others, would love to leave MS completely (still have Windows OS on setups 1 & 4 in sig), but the sad reality is that not all hardware utilities come with linux drivers, and some things are either very difficult or impossible to do with Linux, e.g. flashing BIOS, reconfiguring routers, etc...

Thanks, everyone.  Smile

As usual, I have tried to click each thank button - and apologies to anyone I missed.

I would dearly love to leave Windows behind altogether.  I only have two applications I need Windows for - though one of those might run in Wine; the other almost certainly won't.

I am tempted to wipe the Windows 10 laptop and install LL on that too.  But won't just yet anyway.

I am, however, very very impressed so far with LL.  It is just fantastic!  I've managed to solve nearly every problem quickly; and so far those have only been minor things.  It's running absolutely smoothly on two new laptops I originally bought for Ubuntu-Unity as well as a 7 year old laptop I use for testing now.  Hardware spec uploads pending...

Having LL up and running has just saved me a week or more loss of work while I take the Win 10 laptop back to the shop (2 hours to get back up and running if LL need reinstalling vs 1 week+ at the shop...)

I guess LL is really a labour of love for all involved (as is most open source software, I guess)?  Consider me already loving it!

Take care,
Ian

"Linuxian," LOL.  I'm gonna steal that and put in those forms you fill out for college and employment applications under "race," or "gender," or even "species."

I've been a Linuxian for a few years now, having completely ditched Windows - at first by mistake because I didn't know how to dual-boot, but everything I needed was there anyway in Linux.  I've done all of my college coursework so far in LibreOffice even though my school insists on "Microsoft format" in all term papers and assignments!  here's how I did it.

I'm sure the folks here can help you with breaking whatever strings still bind you to Microsoft.

Proud to be a Linuxian!
