Another 'to-do' marked off the list!

Would like some helpers with this please Smile You don't have to be a code genius, just some basic Git knowledge and Markdown.
I've been using ChatGPT to help, so anyone can do this Smile

This should massively extend the Manual (which this is replacing), and it's my hope it will be one of the largest of any of the distros. We can do it!

Allow me to introduce myself, why not?
Posted by: JimmyJim - 06-18-2025, 02:49 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (1)

Name is Jim, have been using Linux Lite on and off for years. Have several old ex-windows laptops that are happy once again running LL. W7 just ain't no good no more! Used to run Apache server on one, and have a W10 laptop with a hard drive so tiny that Winders won't update -- that one might be next.

These are scattered about the house so as needed someone might grab one and browse away the day. And Samba is running on them all -- file sharing is really sweet.

And I've a goal to publish some open source software. I could never find a picture viewer with all the right features so why not write my own. Using Qt on LL and windows, just coming to terms with Qt Creator. Two things remain -- Zooming with the scroll wheel and working with EXIF data. Fun stuff.

Yeah I'm an old software guy -- PDP 11, DOS, SuperDOS and all the flavours of windows. And now with LL trying to be a little more than an appliance operator.

Good to meet you all,
Jim

  Screen breaks up, checkerboard like.
Posted by: JimmyJim - 06-18-2025, 02:20 AM - Forum: Video Cards - Replies (5)

Looking for help with video issues.

Sometimes the screen will break up into sortof a broken checkerboard pattern, squares maybe 10px wide. And as I move windows around they might flash or change forming diagonal patterns. I have screenshots and hardinfo but can't manage to attach them to this note.

I can't make it happen at will, with a finite number of steps. But scrolling a document, moving a window, watching video -- things involving the mouse and video activity does increase the probability.

Does not seem to matter what application I'm using.

If I logout and log back in it's fine for a while until it breaks again.

If it breaks and I switch users it's fine until I switch back again, so the problem seems limited to user space.

This system is dual boot with windows, running it for years no problem. With Linux Lite it seems a bit fragile.

Thanks in advance to any and all who might venture to assist,
Jim.

No sound device found after kernel update
Posted by: garmilw - 06-15-2025, 11:27 PM - Forum: Sound - Replies (1)

Last week, the Lite system updates included a kernel update to 6.8.60  Since that update, I have been unable to get Lite to recognize my sound card.  Specifically the headphone port where I plug in my speakers is no longer detected.  Looking at the sound mixer, all I have is Dummy Output as a sound device.

I can get sound if I plug in a USB headset, and I get sound remotely from the system if I connect to it via NoMachine, both are treated as separate sound devices from my sound card.

My system is multi-boot, and the headphone port does work when I am booted to Kubuntu, so this is not a hardware problem.

I have tried reinstalling pulseaudio, pipewire, and alsa.  I am not sure what else to try at this point and need advice.

Trying to install 7.4 on older Samsung
Posted by: vint - 06-15-2025, 02:57 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (6)

Howdy fellow Lite users,
It's been a while since I've been on the forum and things sure have changed a lot.  I recently decided to revive my late wife's Samsung NP305V5A 15.6" Laptop from 2012 that hasn't been used for almost a decade.  It has a 1.8 gigahertz AMD processor with 4 gb of ram and a new Samsung 870 EVO 250 gb SSD, I thought I would try out a few distros before making a decision about what would be best, I downloaded Linux Mint XFCE newest version and tried it out and liked it a lot so I installed it and all went fine until the end and it wouldn't boot.  I tried several suggested tips and tricks but it wouldn't boot at all.  So I installed Lite 5.8 in the interim because I know it works on my old Presario without any problems and it loaded without any problems at all, so I decided to download Lite 7.4 and installed it and I ran into the same problem.  It wouldn't boot, I am not sure what the problem is, this laptop has legacy bios, meets more than the minimum requirements and the laptop is in good condition so what could be the problem?

  Booting to Ram
Posted by: bhobba - 06-06-2025, 03:48 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (1)

Hi

Is it possible to boot Linux Lite to RAM?

Will it make any difference if my machine has 16 GB of RAM and a terabyte SSD?

Thanks
Bill

  Hello All
Posted by: bhobba - 06-06-2025, 03:06 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (1)

Hi

I have decided to handle Windows 10 not being supported by switching to Linux Lite.

I am disabled and spend most of my time lying on my bed and using my MacBook.

I have a main machine in my living area with Windows 10, but I want to migrate it to Linux Lite. It has a 3-GHz I7, 256 GB SSD, and a terabyte hard disk.

I live with my sister, who has no machine and uses a mobile. I am considering giving her my main machine and getting a notebook as my backup machine. I also plan to use Linux Lite on it. It will just be a backup machine.   It will probably come with Windows 11, so I may set it up as a dual boot.

For those interested, I am into mathematical physics, and if you are interested, I am a mentor on Physics Forums. I also have a computer science area.

I have over 30 years of experience as a computer programmer in the government, but I retired early due to ill health, so my knowledge is way out of date. I am happy to help if I can.

Thanks
Bill
