Installing LL on a pocket laptop : good or bad idea ?
Posted by: Jean-Marc B - 01-21-2023, 01:39 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (4)

Hi !

First, to be clear, some examples of what a pocket pc is :*

https://www.amazon.fr/TOPOSH-Ordinateur-...r=8-6&th=1

https://www.amazon.fr/Windows-Ordinateur...9tdGY&th=1

I'm considering buying one of those and installing LL on it. Hoping to have something lightweight, cheaper than a tablet, easier to use (I do hate touch screens), good enough to watch videos and surf the net while traveling.

What's your opinion about it ? Doable or not ?

Fire away.

Hello everybody !

There's a new guy on the forum : French, 50, been dabbling with computers since I was 13. Switched to Linux around 6 years ago. Recently installed LinuxLite on an old laptop, which has since better days and turned it into a perfect media center, this gave me the idea for several other projects involving cheap or low end computer.

Hope to have fun with you guys.  :wave

I did "sudo virt-manager"- help needed
Posted by: Rosika - 01-20-2023, 02:30 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

Hi all,

oh dear, oh dear. I might have done something stupid and need your help and opinions
:dft001:.

After my fresh install of Linux Lite 6.2. I wanted to get my virtual machines running again. The images are still present on my third partition and yesterday I installed qemu-system and virt-manager .

After that:

Code:
sudo usermod -aG libvirt rosika

(to add myself to the user group libvirt). After that I rebooted the system.

Now I wanted to create a new vm by importing the respective img-file, e.g. virtualdebian.img for my Debian vm.

For this I employed virt-manager. Yet I couldn´t import the img-file as virt-manager complained about not being allowed to do so.
In order to rectify the situation virt-manager offered me to do just that. Yet it still wouldn´t work. It didn´t have the respective rights.  :023:

So I looked around on the web and found here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/722034/p...ne-manager :

Quote:I had the same issue as well. I fixed it by doing the following:

    Run virt-manager with sudo:

Code:
sudo virt-manager

Attempt to create your VM. When the error dialog appears, click Yes to correct the error.

What this does is change the user and group of your image file (to libvirt-qemu:libvirt-qemu if that's your virt-manager user).

When you get to the next step, cancel the creation process and close virt-manager.

Now relaunch virt-manager without sudo and attempt to create your VM again.

Hmm, I followed the instructions without doing any thinking beforehand. Such a beginner´s mistake.  :dft002:
I should´ve know better. There´s a rule saying not to use sudo with a gui app. But virt-manager is a gui app.

For what ist´s worth the method described worked and my Debian vm could be imported and run.

BUT:

here are my questions:

- by having run
Code:
sudo virt-manager
have I done something VERY stupid that cannot be set straight again?

- is there a way of finding out if something is amiss?

- haven´t got a clonezilla backup available yet, just a timeshift backup. So I could go back in time a few days if need be...
  for the root partition...

- ... but I would lose a lot of programmes I installed in the meantime.

Any ideas or suggestions of what I should do?

Many thanks for your help in advance.

Many greetings
Rosika  :wave

  problems with software-properties-gtk
Posted by: Rosika - 01-18-2023, 01:32 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

Hi all,  Smile

after six and a half years of running Lubuntu as my daily driver I changed to Linux Lite and I´m glad to have a running system again. Wink

Basically I´m very satisfied with it but there seems to be one thing I cannot fix.

In

Code:
software-properties-gtk
I set "Automatically check for updates" to "Never" as I want to do that manually with the command line.
I was asked for my password which I of course entered.

However:

after shutting down the OS in the evening and powering it up the next day I see the changes are ignored and it is set to "Daily" again. I´ve got no idea why that is.

I´m happy to enter any commands in the terminal if that would help but I need the system to accept the changes permanently.

Can anybody help?

Many thanks in advance and many greetings

Overwriting LL4.8 with 6.0 dual boot
Posted by: ohjrson - 01-17-2023, 12:42 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (4)

Ok So I am trying to overwrite my 4.8 LL on my dual boot system (win 10). I try doing what has been suggested in other topics, but I keep getting a message that says: "No root file system is defined,  Please correct this from the partitioning menu."

"Yes, use the "something else" option, and select the partition where 5.8 is installed, then check/select format to ext4."

I've tried this but keep getting the above error.

Let me know what info you might need...

Rewrite....System I have is Windows 10 with dual boot to Linux Lite 4.8. I am simply trying to update to the new 6.0 so I can upgrade to 6.2, Every time I try to install with "something else" it gives me the error. I have searched for updating from 4.8 to 6.0 and found nothing or the same instruction to update as mentioned. (which does not work for me.)

The system is an Acer Aspire laptop AMD A4 7210 w/AMD Radeon R3 graphics. Containing 4 gb memory. 500 gb hard drive.  Came with Win 10.

Thanks
