Update from RC to Stable, or need to reinstall Stable when available?
Posted by: Eddystone - 07-11-2023, 02:07 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (2)

I'm looking to install Lite on a friend's computer that is located at a great distance. I won't be around to install the upcoming new Stable version on that computer.

If I install Linux Lite 6.6 RC1 now, can the system be simply updated from the installed RC1 to the Stable version when it's ready? Or will the Stable version require a clean install?

Thanks.

new to Linux Lite & could use some help if poss
Posted by: willitever - 07-11-2023, 01:55 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (1)

Age 77, not a clue, in a bit of a state.

Using a donated Lenovo repurposed laptop which came preloaded (during Covid) with Linux Lite.

I'm in the process of producing a very, very long document, and it has been a big struggle, but am fairly near the end,  it's been beset with problem after problem, the latest of which is that I deleted a really important folder which contains loads of photos.  I really feel like I'm swimming against the tide, but I try to keep going.

I don't know what version the Linux Lite is, I know there are loads of updates to download but I'm reluctant to change anything on the laptop until the document is finished, at which time I think it would probably be best to install the latest version, I haven't a clue how and haven't looked into it until my document is done.

The folder of photos was on a Toshiba 2 TB external harddrive, I'd got a back-up of everything except these ******* photos, ain't it always the way.

Is there any way I can get the folder of photos back, I haven't opened the drive since the idiotic event so hoping that nothing has changed on there.

After I'd finished screaming, I put a garbled message on the 'contact us' page.  So a couple of days later, I'm hoping this message makes a bit more sense.

How to Install a Nextcloud client

Title. I do not know how to do it. I tried it through  appImage, and nothing happens. The command line option seems to be complex to a linux noob like me.  Someone can show a path that it is not difficult to a 5 y.o. child ? Thanks for the attention.

Email Attachment Button Does Nothing in Firefox.
Posted by: Ean - 07-11-2023, 09:34 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (3)

Hi, I've used LL5.4 for the last 18 months or so, and am very impressed. I use it about 95% of the time. I installed LL6.4 a few days ago, installed Firefox, then deleted Chrome. My PC is a 3GHz dual core Intel with 4Gb RAM. Latest updates for OS and applications were applied.

Following a fresh installation of Linux and Firefox, the attachment button in both Microsoft Outlook and Protonmail does nothing. Firefox settings are the same as I usually apply. I've tried updating Firefox, clearing its cache and closing and reopening it, without success. A reinstallation of Firefox didn't help, and general Internet searches were too generic to be of help with this problem. No add-ons or plugins were added to FF on the second install. The other thing is I can't clear the FF cache using Tweaks as before, because the FF cache entry doesn't appear. Clearing the FF cache from within FF doesn't fully clear it. I also unchecked the "Block pop-up Windows" box in Firefox.

I found a post on the forum suggesting "the drag and drop method". I tried this and it worked; the attachment was sent, received and opened. However, if possible it would be nice to be able to do it using the button in the email client if possible.

Can anyone throw any light on this?

  Hi!

Hi to all the Linux Lite Community! I'm Guido Panebianco. I'm passionated about operating systems, and especially about Linux distros.
I have changed in my life many distros for my computers. I installed a month ago in my Toshiba computer of year 2013 this wonderful distro, which is Linux Lite 6.4 64 bit.
I appreciate very much the lightness of this distribution.
I recommend this Linux distribution to all the people that have an older pc or laptop to revive (like the mine).

Greetings

  Linux Lite 6.6 RC1 Released
Posted by: Valtam - 07-09-2023, 09:05 PM - Forum: Release Announcements - No Replies

Release Announcement

Linux Lite 6.6 RC1 is now available for testing.

This is one our largest releases on record since we began in 2012.

We've added 1000's of lines of new code in the form of supporting a large range of languages.
We've massively increased the number of language translations across the entire Menu and Sub-Menu system, by adding support for 22 Languages.
We had the time to take on a task of this magnitude so we used it completely.

We're releasing this RC with a longer than usual test time to allow for feedback and corrections to occur.
There are some details below, but all of the changes will be in the Final Release Announcement.

Linux Lite 6.6 Final will be released on 1st September, 2023.

Changes:

Support for 22 new Languages added

Afrikaans
Arabic
Chinese - Simplified
Croatian
Dutch
Finnish
French
German
Hebrew
Hindi
Italian
Japanese
Korean
Persian
Polish
Portuguese
Portuguese - Brazilian
Russian
Serbian
Spanish
Sweden
Ukranian

In the areas of:

Main Menu
Right click Menu
Folder Names
Linux Lite Application names
Desktop Icons
My Computer Menu names

Having completed a fresh install of Linux Lite 6.6, once you have restarted after the first login, full language support will be available across the entire Menu and Sub-Menu system. If there are still Menu entries that are not in your language, then consider contributing a translation to that developers software.

If you'd like to help out with Translations in this Series for the above mentioned areas, please go here https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/translations/ and post a reply with your changes under your Language thread. Thanks for helping the community out Smile There is still much to do, but we've made massive improvements to date.

Installation

How do I know if my Windows PC has UEFI?

In Windows Search, type msinfo or msinfo32 and launch the desktop app named System Information. Look for the BIOS Mode item, and if the value for it is UEFI, then you have the UEFI firmware. If it says BIOS Mode Legacy, then that’s the firmware you’re running.

Secure Boot is supported, but unless you know exactly how to handle it, it is a P.I.T.A. at best so I am going to say...you must disable Secure Boot to enable stress free computing.

Some helpful snippets from the latest Help Manual:

UEFI Support link - https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/uefi-secure-boot/

Details:

Kernel: 5.15.0-76 ( custom kernels also available via our Repository for versions 3.13 - 6.4 )
Chrome: 114.0
Thunderbird: 102.11
LibreOffice: 7.4.7
VLC: 3.0.16
Gimp: 2.10.30
Base: 22.04.2

Known Issues:

Eject Media prompt is only available at the end of the UEFI install.
Dropbox: if you get an error, run the set up twice.
There is NO Grub Edit in Lite Tweaks in this Series for Linux Lite due to an unsolvable issue. Ubuntu will show in the Grub menu if you are dual or more booting. Try Grub Customizer if it would like to change the wording.
Grub menu shows Linux Lite as 'Ubuntu'. See below for more on this.

- Open /etc/default/grub as Administrator.
- Comment out: GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian` and leave GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Linux Lite' uncommented.
- Should look like:
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Linux Lite'
#GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
- sudo update-grub

Grub - press the ESC key whilst booting in UEFI mode after your BIOS has posted. Use the SHIFT key if running Linux Lite in Legacy mode.

Help Manual will be updated in the Final.

OEM Install option - is broken and crashes near the end of the install. If a fix can't be found, it will be excluded from each release until a solution if found.

Other Issues

Please let us know.

Size: 2.3Gb (DVD, USB)

Live USB/DVD/VirtualBox/Vmware:

Login is automatic, no credentials are required. The image can be written to a 4gb or larger USB stick, or a writable DVD. Alternatively, you can use the dd command: sudo dd if=linux-lite-6.6-rc1-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M where 'x' is the letter of your usb stick. In linux to find out the letter of your usb stick, open a terminal and type: df -h It is usually listed as 'media' or similar. Please see the built in Help Manual if you require a more detailed explanation of this procedure.

A good, simple point and click USB ISO burner is https://www.balena.io/etcher/ or https://rufus.ie/
In our testing, Etcher and Rufus (for Windows only) have proven to be the most reliable. Etcher is available for Mac, Windows & Linux.

If the screen locks during Live mode, type linux into the user box and click on the Login button (no password required)

Minimum Recommended Specs:
1Ghz processor
768mb ram
8gb HDD/SD
VGA screen capable of 1024x768 resolution
DVD drive or USB port for the ISO image

Preferred Specs:
1.5GHz processor+
1024mb ram+
20gb HDD/SSD+
VGA, DVI or HDMI screen capable of 1366x768 resolution+
DVD drive or USB port for the ISO image

Login to the live desktop is automatic.

The first thing you MUST do after a fresh install of Linux Lite is run Menu, Favorites, Install Updates.

As this is a RC release, there are bound to be bugs etc. Please help make the final stable for other people by participating in this RC. Please report any bugs and feedback in this thread.

Thank you

Jerry and the team.

Posted by: billtour - 07-07-2023, 03:05 AM - Forum: Updates - Replies (1)

I don't know if they are related, but this is just one of several problems I'm having with Linux Lite.  I have created a post for a problem getting VLC installed and working and another post for an issue with getting a DVD burner to work other than to watch a commercial DVD.

Thanks for any help you can offer.  Here is the update error log:

USB DVDRW drive: "...Failed Mount. Operation permitted for root only"
Posted by: billtour - 07-07-2023, 02:53 AM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (3)

New dvdrw drive (external usb).  I can play a commercial DVD with no problem.  An icon appears on the desktop (us-Initio_DVD-RAM_UJ-841S_0000000000000000W).  Brasero says it cannot find a burner.  When I try to mount it (right-click on icon), it gives me a "Failed Mount - operation permitted for root only".  What do you think?
