  Screensaver interrupts fullscreen Firefox videos
Posted by: mulcahey - 11-23-2023, 03:06 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (10)

Lately, my screensaver has started coming on while I'm watching fullscreen videos in Firefox. This happens when I'm watching Netflix or YouTube.

This is unusual; In the past, if I made a video fullscreen, the screensaver would not come on. But now the screensaver comes on every 15 min or so.

Has anyone else encountered this issue? Know how to fix?

Thank you.

Network Manager applet weirdness - Lite 6.x
Posted by: WytWun - 11-22-2023, 05:33 AM - Forum: Network - No Replies

I'm seeing two somewhat different weird behaviours with the Network Manager applet in Lite 6.x:

  1. In a VirtualBox VM currently running 6.6: the NM applet reports no connection on login even though the network is connected and working.  The only way I've found to wake the NM applet up is to use
Code:
nmtui
  • to activate the connection.  The VM was installed as 6.2 and then upgraded directly to 6.6 but the issue was visible in 6.2 before the upgrade.[/li]
  • On a Lenovo Ideapad 100S (-11IBY) currently running 6.6:  This laptop doesn't have a builtin ethernet interface so I normally connect via a USB ethernet or 4G dongle - if the USB dongle is present during boot the NM applet displays and correctly shows the connection state; if the dongle is plugged in after boot the NM applet won't display at all.  This one I think is at least related to me having disabled WiFi connections to save battery life.  It normally isn't much of a problem except if neither dongle is handy and I want to use WiFi as I haven't found a way to enable WiFi without plugging in a USB dongle  >Sad.  The laptop was upgraded to 6.6 from 6.4; I don't recall when I disabled the WiFi.

I'm not seeing similar problems either in a Lite 5.x VM, a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 laptop (Yoga 2nd gen; has a builtin ethernet interface) or an Acer laptop with builtin ethernet interface running Lite 5.8.

Both issues are more cosmetic than anything, though the 2nd is disruptive on the rare occasions I want to use WiFi with that laptop.  I've tried to compare the configurations between the working and non-working instances and so far I've not found any difference that would lead to the first problem; as noted above I think the simple lack of any enabled interface leads to the 2nd but I think that it would be helpful if there was a way to configure the NM applet to stay up in the absence of same, unless Networking is actually disabled (and then it would be useful to have a convenient way to re-enable it and also to re-enable WiFi when that has been disabled and there's no builtin ethernet interface).

If the brains trust has any ideas that might alleviate these issues, I'm all ears...

Xbox 360 controller giving conflict with the mouse
Posted by: TylerDurden - 11-21-2023, 01:42 AM - Forum: Games Support - No Replies

Friends, I have an Xbox 360 wireless controller, I installed the xpad and the controller works normally, but there is one problem: while I move the analog buttons, it controls the mouse. This really hinders me from enjoying Xbox Cloud. :012:  How to resolve this? Thank you very much in advance.

Network speeds differ according to boot source
Posted by: Earthenware - 11-20-2023, 08:51 AM - Forum: Network - Replies (10)

Here’s a weird one.  I’ve used LL versions 1 through 5 and never seen this before.

I recently bought a new PC. I’d prepared an LL 6.6 Live USB Boot drive ahead of time.

When I boot from the Live USB and use Chrome, I get full internet speed.  I can watch YouTube videos fullscreen at 1080p60fps with no dropped frames.  Even 1440p works fine, although 4K does start to stutter a little (which may be more to do with my integrated CPU).

However…

With LL 6.6 installed, everything works fine EXCEPT network speeds. YouTube videos now struggle to play at 480p, sometimes dropping to 360p and I’ve even seen 240p.

Internet speed tests reveal that, instead of the 40mbps that I would normally see, I’m lucky to get more than 2mbps.

This is consistent and repeatable. It occurs with every browser (Chrome, Brave and Firefox).

The only reason I can think of for this is that different ethernet driver(s) are being used on the Live USB and the installed version. I tried another Llinux version to test this (MX) and the results are the same.

Does anyone have an idea what’s going on and how I can fix this?

Add terminal commands to LinuxLite iso
Posted by: coderlen - 11-19-2023, 06:44 PM - Forum: Other - No Replies

I have LinuxLite as one of several Linux OSs on a USB, using Ventoy. I would like to have the terminal command "chntpw" as part of the iso. This command is not part of LinuxLite, but I need it to be on the iso so that I can help people who have forgotten their password and need access to their laptop. The "chntpw" command allows me to delete the current Windows password, which allows the user to access their laptop again, without a password. They can then choose to create a password within Windows, if they so desire.

In other words, I need to be able to insert my USB into a laptop, and have the LinuxLite live USB come up, with the "chntpw" command already installed on the USB. That way, I don't need to have Internet access to download the chntpw command.

So, if there is a way to add a command to the iso before copying it to the USB, I need to know how to do that.

Thanks.

Major issue with the Linux Lite 6.6 and GTX 660 (not sure if bug).
Posted by: Zapmaster - 11-16-2023, 08:18 AM - Forum: Security & Bug Fixes - Replies (1)

So I just updated my dad's PC from 4.8 with a fresh install of 6.6. And whatever the default GPU drivers are would cause screen glitching in about 5-10 minutes and then a freeze. This was fixed by installing Nvidia's official driver 390 for the GTX 660. Possibly a major bug for people trying the OS, as those especially new to Linux would most likely have no idea how to trouble shoot this or change drivers via terminal. Opening Chrome would cause an automatic freeze as well. The screen was also glitching midway through the install. Just posting this in case it helps, as I think this is a great OS. My senior dad has been using it since 3.x days, so thank you for the Linux Lite. With the 390 drivers everything works perfectly.

User Manager wont create new user?
Posted by: Bandito Dorito - 11-16-2023, 03:17 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

HI, new here, and need some help lol.

currently having an issue with the user manager. i'm trying to add a new user for a gmod server but for some reason i get either an error message saying "it was not possible to add user 'gmod server'. System message: b". " or the 'select user' box goes from my primary account to blank.

I did try using the terminal but it resulted in the system telling me the many uses for the 'user' command lol.

If this is spam i apologies, any help would be welcome, thanks in advanced.
